91% of declared chemical weapons destroyed*

Body

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has destroyed about 91% of declared chemical weapons stockpiles. But questions persist over how much clandestine stock of this weapon of mass destruction (WMD) remains in the hands of rogue states and non-state groups. Other WMDs (nuclear and biological) also continue to pose threats to global security. Livermore, an OPCW-certified laboratory, applies its chemical, nuclear, and biological forensics expertise to help investigate, identify, and counter all WMD threats.

4,000 stockpiled U.S. nuclear warheads*

In a world that possess more than 10,000 nuclear weapons, the U.S. maintains a stockpile of more than 4,000 nuclear warheads. The Stockpile Stewardship program ensures the safety, security, and reliability of these warheads without nuclear testing. Livermore’s expertise in high-energy-density science, high-performance computing, and nuclear and isotopic science, combined with unique research facilities, meet the formidable technical challenges of ensuring that the nuclear deterrent remains effective.

4 billion records hacked in 2016*

New national security threats require countermeasures and deterrence beyond the nuclear weapons arena. One example is cyberattacks: billions of  records are hacked online each year, exposing personal, corporate, and government data to criminal enterprises and state-sponsored incursions. These attacks also pose a danger to the nation’s economic and industrial infrastructure. Livermore applies its expertise in high-performance computing  and data analytics to strengthen cybersecurity and protect sensitive information and networks.

8 Million Barrels of Oil Imported Per Day*

Body

The U.S. economy consumes the energy equivalent of 80 barrels of oil every second. Despite rapid growth in domestic fossil fuel production and renewable energy generation, the U.S. continues to depend on energy imports. As a result, our economy and national security remain susceptible to supply disruptions. Livermore’s expertise across a range of science and technology from materials science and geophysics to high-performance computing addresses the challenges of increasing U.S. industry’s energy efficiency while expanding the reliable, sustainable, affordable supply of domestic energy.
